Fantasy Baseball SP Roundup 5/12: Ober Achiever

Welcome to the SP Roundup, my daily fantasy baseball article reviewing every starting pitcher’s performance from every Tuesday game. I apologize for the jokes written in my delirium in advance. Have questions? Ask me during my office hours on Twitch.tv weekday mornings from 10 am-12 pm ET.
Bailey Ober (MIN) vs MIA (W) – 9.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 89 pitches.
So, uh, Bailey Ober, the guy who is sitting 88 on his four-seamer and fanned eight batters in his previous three games, just pitched a Maddux against the Marlins: 9.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 89 pitches (W). That now marks three ER total in four of his last five starts, accruing 27 IP in that time. Yeah…we gotta chat.
Ober was certainly lucky in this one, without question. He was hilariously efficient at fanning batters who saw two strikes (78% per-batter PAR?! He’s had a 41% this season…), while 20/22 outs in play is clearly not a common rate we should come to expect. That said, Ober did a fantastic job locating his four-seamer and changeup to LHB, helping him induce a boatload of weak contact (82%!), outlining how Koufax didn’t have as much of an opportunity to sway the result.
When I question a pitcher’s stuff, it’s less that I question the ability for them to have a great game, it’s that I question their ability to prevent a terrible game. If Ober is able to locate his entire arsenal as well as he did here (sweepers, sliders, and curveballs all did work, too!), he’s not a bad pitcher. However, we’ve seen so much of Ober since the start of 2025 that suggests he’s not capable of executing like this for a long period of time, let alone in such a precarious situation at 88 mph. This feels awfully like a He can’t keep getting away with it moment, and while I’m happy he had a lovely moment in the sun, the shadows are sure to arrive soon enough. (View Game Card)
Let’s see how every other SP did Tuesday:
Paul Skenes (PIT) vs COL (W) – 8.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 0 BBs, 10 Ks – 19 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 98 pitches.
Aces gonna ace for a Gallows Pole. He was perfect through six, and to be honest, it’s a disappointment that he didn’t get it done. Without Skubs and Crochet around, we need Skenes to emit the aura of The Highlander. (View Game Card)
Shane McClanahan (TBR) @ TOR (ND) – 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 80 pitches.
The change is dope and he’s flirting with 96 mph as he locates heaters upstairs incessantly. McShane, you’re making blush. (View Game Card)
Slade Cecconi (CLE) vs LAA (ND) – 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 89 pitches.
Ceconni’s cutter is still above 89 mph and I dig that, but he was awfully inefficient in this one, even if he eventually got the strikeout. I didn’t enjoy the sporadic heaters, either, and I’d pass on the Tigers next time out. Sorry, Slade. (View Game Card)
MacKenzie Gore (TEX) vs ARI (W) – 8.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 8 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 95 pitches.
Finally. This is just the second game under 2 ER for Gore all season, oddly enough in a start with his third lowest SwStr rate. It’s not the best sign heading into Coors, though I really liked seeing the curveball land down and in town frequently to RHB. Possibly the best hook of the season. (View Game Card)
Zack Wheeler (PHI) @ BOS (W) – 7.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 0 BBs, 4 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 87 pitches.
We’re down to 95 mph on the four-seamer, but the sinker was painted inside to RHB (and allowed two absurdly weak hits that make me outraged) and his overall command was solid. It’s possible this is the guy we get for the year and even at a 22% strikeout rate, y’all should be thrilled. (View Game Card)
Brayan Bello (BOS) vs PHI (L) – 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 88 pitches.
Ah, so Bello definitely needs an opener forever now, eh? He was fearless with his sinker over the plate at 55%+ usage to both LHB and RHB for a boatload of called strikes, while the cutter was a great tool for RHB, while the curve and change helped a bit to LHB. I don’t see a truly changed arm here (I’m still shocked they took those sinkers) and Hotlanta is too scary to roster Bello. (View Game Card)
Miles Mikolas (WSN) @ CIN (ND) – 3.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 2 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 71 pitches.
Oh. Hey, Mikolas. Hi. Can I go now? (View Game Card)
Freddy Peralta (NYM) vs DET (W) – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 100 pitches.
Peralta continues to provide a solid ERA and strikeout production with a questionable WHIP. It’s who we signed up for. (View Game Card)
Bryan Woo (SEA) @ HOU (W) – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BBs, 9 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 104 pitches.
Aces gonna ace. For real, nothing to worry about after those two games. But his extension was down all the way to just six feet. Huh, so it was. That’s weird. I wouldn’t worry about it. Let me distract you by noting that his sweeper is a tick harder and now being featured 30% of the time to RHB for 17% SwStr and a 75% strike rate. (View Game Card)
Will Warren (NYY) @ BAL (W) – 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 96 pitches.
Great to see Warren back on track, even with a Careful, Icarus in the sixth where both runs scored on two doubles sandwiching a single. Shocked to see just a 52% strike rate on the sweeper, and his fastballs were not spotted brilliantly as we’ve seen in the past, but we’re all cool here. (View Game Card)
Adrian Houser (SFG) @ LAD (ND) – 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 91 pitches.
How dang, look at you! I’ll give the Gold Star to Houser since he had a tougher opponent than Ober, and remind y’all he gets Sacré Verde next. If you start him, you’ll be shouting his name like Rocky. (View Game Card)
Michael Lorenzen (COL) @ PIT (L) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 85 pitches.
Strong…good? It was a game on the road in a great matchup, I knew I should have brought candles for a potential Birthday Party. No, I’m not going to change my tune simply because he was sitting 1-2 ticks up in this one. The situation is just too rough. (View Game Card)
Erick Fedde (CHW) vs KCR (ND) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 80 pitches.
Speaking of a Birthday Party… (View Game Card)
Walbert Ureña (LAA) @ CLE (L) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 91 pitches.
I knew I should have leaned into the Ureña stream… He was served the LHB exclusive lineup we expected and his changeup was called upon for 50% usage. It answered the call (and little else did), as he bore down across five innings. I don’t see a whole lot more in the tank here, without a whiffable fastball or breaker. (View Game Card)
Grant Holmes (ATL) vs CHC (ND) – 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 1 Hits, 4 BBs, 5 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 78 pitches.
Not much of a surprise here, it was the Cubs, after all. REB continues to break the Huascar Rule and I’ll continue ignore him indefinitely. (View Game Card)
Eury Pérez (MIA) @ MIN (L) – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 Hits, 3 BBs, 8 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 87 pitches.
We’re in Eury purgatory and a PQS with eight strikeouts is a welcome sight. That said, his command is still terrible. He introduced a sinker this game for RHB (that’s cool!) and he could not get that thing anywhere near the plate, returning a 21% strike rate across fourteen thrown. It’s a battle each start and I’m still leaning away from Pérez for the year. I know the line is generally solid (1.00 WHIP, too!), but I don’t have the faith he can execute an approach consistently through outings. So, do I drop him? Well, his schedule is great: @TBR & NYM. Might as well hold for those, right? (View Game Card)
Brandon Sproat (MIL) vs SDP (W) – 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks – 15 Whiffs, 38% CSW, 85 pitches.
I feel like a King Cole is just taunting me after this Careful, Icarus via a solo shot in the sixth. Sproat has completed the sixth just once this season and this was a much more encouraging outing (48% CSW and 71% strikes on the cutter was so much easier to watch than last outing’s debacle), though I’m surprised his sweeper isn’t the whiff pitch it used to be. I may be down to start him @MIN, but the Dodgers loom around the corner, making it a questionable investment at this time. (View Game Card)
Andre Pallante (STL) @ ATH (W) – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 85 pitches.
He got you a dub but at what cost? AT WHAT COST?! Seriously though, if you actually started Pallante here for the chance at a Win, that’s kinda awesome. Enjoy your brief, niche moment. (View Game Card)
Patrick Corbin (TOR) vs TBR (ND) – 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 9 Hits, 1 BBs, 1 Ks – 4 Whiffs, 14% CSW, 86 pitches.
Womp womp. We don’t expect the world from Corbin, but he had a streak of five straight with 2 ER or fewer. Well, now he has a new streak of just one strikeout in each of his last two! You can feel the crusts of loaves everywhere shiver. Where will we get our butter, father? I DON’T KNOW SON. Why are you yelling? I. DON’T. KNOW. I really need to sleep, y’all. (View Game Card)
Jack Flaherty (DET) @ NYM (L) – 3.2 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 2 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 97 pitches.
After fanning ten, you, the smart fantasy manager, knew it wasn’t sustainable and didn’t test the waters against the Mets. I know all about putaway rates! Yes, you do, and get ready to tell your neighbors after they just heard you shout that at 2:00am. WORTH IT. (View Game Card)
Brady Singer (CIN) vs WSN (L) – 3.2 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 75 pitches.
That’s a 5.79 ERA and 1.67 WHIP and just a 14% strikeout rate for Singer this year. If the Reds had someone else ready to go for this rotation, I’d imagine Singer would be gone. It’s rough. (View Game Card)
Jeffrey Springs (ATH) vs STL (L) – 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 Hits, 3 BBs, 5 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 98 pitches.
It’s hard to find sunshine and rainbows in Sacré Verde. Or really anywhere for Springs these days. You can do better. Me or him? Yes. Uhhh. YES. (View Game Card)
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (LAD) vs SFG (ND) – 6.1 IP, 5 ER, 6 Hits, 0 BBs, 8 Ks – 15 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 93 pitches.
Aces gonna allow three solo shots, then get a Careful, Icarus by sticking around for the seventh. But guess what? MORE HIGH FOUR-SEAMERS FOR WHIFFS. And a HR. Well, that was middle-in, but he’s going upstairs! And it’s cool! I know he’s allowed at least 3 ER in each of his last four starts after refusing to do so in each of his first four outings, but don’t fret. He’s still a CSW darling and the HRs will disappear. (View Game Card)
Stephen Kolek (KCR) @ CHW (ND) – 4.2 IP, 5 ER, 5 Hits, 3 BBs, 6 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 94 pitches.
Blegh. He cruised through four at 62 pitches, then it all came apart in the fifth with a terrible cutter for a solo shot, a string of hits, and another terrible mistake for a three-run HR (a slider down the pipe to Meidroth). Life comes at ya fast, y’all. It’s too bad, as I was kinda digging his LHB approach prior to those mistakes, and I’m still a little tempted in deeper formats to start him against the Cardinals on Sunday. In 12-teamers, consider Kolek if you’re looking for a potential six-inning outing given his high pitch counts and strike rates that are usually higher than the 56% clip he featured today. (View Game Card)
Colin Rea (CHC) @ ATL (L) – 4.1 IP, 5 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 1 Ks – 2 Whiffs, 20% CSW, 80 pitches.
It was Hotlanta for a pitcher we only consider as a streamer against poor offenses. Why did you rely on Rea to butter your bread? That’s on me. Sure is. (View Game Card)
Trevor Rogers (BAL) vs NYY (L) – 4.0 IP, 6 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 3 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 73 pitches.
It was a literal Still ILL as Rogers returned from the IL after enduring an actual illness, and after allowing a Goldschmidt solo shot on his first pitch of the game, he found trouble in the third with a laborious inning, capped by a three-run shot on a terrible four-seamer in Grisham’s nitro zone. I have good news, though. It’s the Rays next and Rogers was sitting a tick up at 94 mph. He also had a legit changeup and kept the heater up to RHB. If he was dropped, now is the time to jump back in. The skills are still there for success against the Rays, and we can talk after. (View Game Card)
Tatsuya Imai (HOU) vs SEA (L) – 4.0 IP, 6 ER, 5 Hits, 3 BBs, 3 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 80 pitches.
Womp womp. I believed in the winter that Imai would be a legit arm given his NBP success + his competitive attitude + flat four-seamer, but here we are, still waiting for him to convince he’s worthy of a roster spot. This was a Still ILL. Yeah, I know. He also didn’t throw a single splitter. Wait, really? Yeah… Not a good sign. (View Game Card)
Matt Waldron (SD) @ MIL (L) – 2.2 IP, 6 ER, 8 Hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 59 pitches.
Remember kids: Don’t Trust A Knuckleballer. (View Game Card)
Zac Gallen (ARI) @ TEX (L) – 4.2 IP, 7 ER, 7 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 95 pitches.
Jeeeeeez, you have such a good schedule (SFG, Rockie Road, @TEA) and there was legit pitch separation, but the velocity is down to 92/93 mph and the Rangers got to him, especially in his final frame. Sigh. It still looks decent on paper with his high pitch count and generally good-enough command and arsenal, but yeah, we can’t, can we? We’re considering Gallen when we shouldn’t even be considering a Quart. (View Game Card)
