Was Savannah Guthrie Part Of The Motive For Nancy Guthrie’s Kidnapping?

As the search for Nancy Guthrie hit the 100-day mark on May 12, investigators are sharing the latest update on her case amid ongoing speculation about whether her daughter, Savannah, was part of the motive behind the 84-year-old woman’s kidnapping.

On Tuesday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared a statement about Nancy, who was last seen at her Tuscon home on January 31. “As we reach the 100-day mark in this investigation, scientific evidence processing and digital media analysis remain ongoing. PCSD and FBI personnel continue to review evidence using established forensic protocols,” the statement read.

Authorities have been strategically quiet about leads in the case. They have not confirmed whether they believe more than one person was involved in Nancy’s abduction nor have they identified any suspects or persons of interest.

A motive has not been disclosed but expert analyst Dr. Ann Burgess did recently speculate that Nancy’s news anchor daughter, Savannah, may be connected to the motive during May 6 special NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery. “Well, first you want to always ask who’s suffering the most of this, who is hurt the most? And in this case, it doesn’t have to be the mother. It could be somebody in the family. Somebody — Savannah,” Burgess explained.

When asked if the motive behind Nancy’s kidnapping could have been to make Savannah “suffer,” Burgess delivered a firm “yes.”

Nancy was last seen when her son-in-law dropped her home on the night of January 31. She was reported missing the following day and, based on evidence found at her home, is believed to have been abducted. Investigators have looked into messages sent to media outlets, claiming to be from the kidnappers. Multiple messages made a bitcoin ransom demand.

Investigators have also emphasized the forensic evidence that was gathered. “We continue to work with our labs,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told Tucson’s 13 News on Monday, May 11, 2026. “Whether it’s on the digital end or the biological end, DNA.”
