Germany’s impressive penalty shoot out record at the World Cup was toppled by Paraguay at Boston Stadium on June 29.
Prior to the 2026 shoot out with Paraguay, Germany has never lost, and they’ve only failed to score once when a game headed into a shoot out.
In the elmination rounds of World Cup soccer, if teams are still tied at the end of overtime it heads to a penalty shoot out.
Prior to the 2026 shoot out with Paraguay, Germany has gone to shoot outs four times in their World Cup history, in France in 1982, Mexico in 1986, England in 1990, and Argentina in 2006. In total, the penalties resulted in 18 shots on net, of which they’ve only missed once.
The one time a goal was stopped was all the way back in 1982 when French goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ettori caught one of the shots.
But against Paraguay, six shots were taken. Two were blocked by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, sending the two teams to a sudden death shoot out. In the sudden death, the first German shot went high and wide, the first time Germany has ever seen a player miss the goal in the shoot out.
Paraguay didn’t miss.

Paraguay has been to shoot outs twice in World Cup history. They won both times, once against Japan and not against Germany.
