Under an overpass is not where you want to be during a tornado
Why taking shelter under a highway overpass is one of the most dangerous choices you can make during a tornado.
Severe thunderstorms are moving across parts of western New York Wednesday afternoon, bringing the potential for damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for portions of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Livingston and Wyoming counties through midafternoon.
Forecasters said the strongest storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail as they move east at about 30 mph.
Communities impacted by the warning included Dansville, Belfast, Rushford, Houghton, Nunda and the area around Letchworth State Park.
The storm system also affected parts of Interstate 390 between exits 4 and 5.
The National Weather Service warned that tornadoes can quickly develop from severe thunderstorms and urged residents to remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Meteorologists said damaging winds could bring down trees and power lines and cause damage to roofs and siding.
Frequent lightning and brief heavy rain are also possible during stronger storms.
Drivers were urged to use caution, especially during periods of reduced visibility and strong wind gusts.
The National Weather Service advises people to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard.
Residents should stay away from windows and move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building during severe weather warnings.
If a tornado warning is issued or a tornado is spotted, officials recommend going to a basement or small interior room away from windows.
