Jamie Vardy wants to return to Leicester City for one final season, and maybe as a player-coach, it has been claimed.
Vardy, City’s greatest-ever player, left the club after 500 appearances and 200 goals over 13 years last summer, moving to Cremonese in Serie A.
The striker, now 39 years old, has an option to extend his contract with the club for another year if they stay up. They’re one point from safety with two games to go.
But now Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that Vardy may not take up that option because of his desire to return to City.
They say he wants one more year at the King Power Stadium, potentially combining playing duties with a coaching role.
His wife Rebekah, has seemingly quashed the rumours on social media by posting: “Fake news, I’m afraid.”
Vardy has never publicly indicated that he envisaged a career in coaching or management after his retirement, although has always insisted he would keep playing until his legs prevented him from doing so.
The striker has started 22 of Cremonese’s 36 league matches this season and has only had one injury during the campaign. He’s provided six goals that have helped towards the club’s survival fight.
City, meanwhile, struggled up front in Vardy’s absence. Neither Jordan Ayew nor Patson Daka effectively filled the void left by the iconic number nine.
They’re both set to leave the King Power Stadium at the end of their contracts, which will mean City are heading into next season without a senior striker on their books.
