MANILA, Philippines —Iga Swiatek expects a “more tricky” match against Alex Eala when they meet in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday (Philippine time).
Eala faces the Polish star for the third time in her career–but for the first time in a Grand Slam competition and on the grass surface— where the Filipino tennis ace has been playing her best tennis so far.
Swiatek, the defending champion, knows the challenge the Filipino rising star poses after Eala reached the third round with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Maya Joint.
“I don’t particularly know her game on grass. Obviously, you can watch a little bit. But I know how she plays because we’ve played already. She has a tricky game. I can assume on grass that it’s even [trickier] because of the surface,” said Swiatek in a press conference.

Alexandra Eala became the first player from the Philippines to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in the Open era, beating Maya Joint in an “electric” atmosphere at Wimbledon on Thursday.
The 21-year-old fought back to defeat Serena Williams’ first-round conqueror Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, roared on by hundreds of Filipino spectators on Court Three.
“It’s obviously an amazing thing for me to do that for my country,” she said after booking a last-32 tie with reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek.
“I really appreciate that I’m able to share this with the nation, but I think first and foremost it makes me super proud because of the work that I’ve put in.”

There was an unmistakably Filipino feel to the small arena on Thursday, and not just provided by her legion of enthusiastic fans waving the Southeast Asian archipelago nation’s flag.

The journey continues for Alex Eala—and it will go through a familiar foe on an unfamiliar surface hosting their duel.
The 21-year-old Filipino star heads into Wimbledon’s third round, where she will meet defending champion Iga Swiatek, hoping to add more days to what has already been a historic stretch for Eala at All-England Club.
The popular left-hander surrendered just two games in the final two sets and took down Maya Joint, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, late Thursday evening (Manila time) in the second round of the grass court Grand Slam.
But things are about to get harder for Eala, already making history as the first seeded female player from the Philippines to win two games at Wimbledon.
Eala and Swiatek have met twice in the past, with both splitting those matches.
