Kelechi Iheanacho understands what the Glasgow derby means to Celtic ahead of Rangers visit

Kelechi Iheanacho is yet to play against Rangers this season despite signing for Celtic in the summer.

That probably sums up Iheanacho’s situation at Parkhead this season, and how his injuries and lack of fitness have caused havoc.

But Iheanacho is firing right now, and possibly at the right time because Rangers visit Celtic Park on Sunday, for one of the biggest Glasgow derby matches in recent times.

Watching on from afar, the Nigerian star, even though he hasn’t been on the pitch for any of the matches against Rangers this term, understands what this game is all about.

“The Glasgow derby is one of the biggest derbies in the world, so I will be happy to be part of it and enjoy it as well,” said Iheanacho.

“Hopefully, if I get a goal, but the most important thing for us is to win the game. So, hopefully, we will get the win.”

Kelechi Iheanacho talks about Celtic’s showdown with Rangers

Many will debate whether Martin O’Neill should start Iheanacho because, once again, he scored a crucial winning goal for the Hoops.

Celtic’s win over Hibernian last time out was huge, adding to the significance of Hearts beating Danny Rohl’s men at Tynecastle on Bank Holiday Monday.

It provides Celtic with a chance to well and truly boot Rangers out of the title race, that’s if Hearts haven’t already done it, because they play Motherwell on Saturday evening.

Either way, the Glasgow derby isn’t about pretty play, building from the back or deep tactical detail. But just about winning, and winning at all costs.

Iheanacho, while he told Celtic TV that he is hoping to score against the Gers, understands that all that matters is that the team puts three points on the board.

“I am happy,” said Iheanacho. “The fans are loving every moment of it. I am enjoying it as well. We just need to focus on the rest of the games and do the job we need to do. And then, at the end, we will get the trophy, hopefully.
