‘Could be a tree limb’: Hydro One discusses today’s outage

More than 11,000 customers in the Sault were without power for a brief period while crews worked to restore electricity in phases
Hydro One says today’s outage was caused by something coming into contact with a transmission line.
It happened at around 10:38 a.m. on a line from the Third Line transmission station, said Tiziana Baccega Rosa, a spokesperson with Hydro One.
More than 11,000 customers in the Sault were without power for a brief period while crews worked to restore electricity in phases.
“We’re not sure what took the line out of service. Could be a tree limb. There are various factors that could come in contact with a line,” Baccega Rosa said.
She said when something comes in contact with a transmission line, “it causes protection and control equipment to operate as designed.
“By doing that it minimizes the number of people impacted. When it was determined there was nothing on the line, we returned it to service,” Baccega Rosa said.
PUC had crews patrol the affected high-voltage line and found no visible issues.
“This can happen when protection equipment operates as designed in response to an event,” said Lauren MacGillivray, a PUC spokesperson.
“Working with our supplier and using available data, the section of line involved has been identified. Service has been restored and we will continue to monitor it closely.”
As of 3:53 p.m., a new outage impacted 244 customers near Superior Heights Collegiate and Vocational School.
