Marc Guehi drops ‘unreal’ Kolo Toure verdict as defender opens up on Man City legend

  • Marc Guehi shares thoughts on Kolo Toure
  • Heaps praise on ex-City defender
  • Focus turns to Man City’s FA Cup final

Speaking during a candid interview with former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, Marc Guehi has detailed the massive impact Kolo Toure has had on him.

The 25-year-old arrived at Etihad Stadium on the back of some stellar showings with Crystal Palace. Indeed, he was a rock in that Eagles defence.

The positional awareness, discipline, ball-playing, winning aerial duels. Guehi knew what it meant to wear the armband, and that’s what swayed Pep Guardiola to go after him.

Sure, he has had some dull outings with the Sky Blues, such as the Everton game for example, but Guehi’s leadership and composure have made him a mainstay in Guardiola’s starting XI.

It’s a start that somewhat mirrors Toure’s first campaign with City back in the 09/10 season. The only difference is that Guehi is a January signing, so the full-season verdict cannot come in before next summer.

Marc Guehi’s honest thoughts on Kolo Toure

Toure made over 100 appearances for Man City and was a pivotal figure in the historic 2011/12 title-winning squad.

For a modern-day physical defender like Guehi, tapping into the knowledge of a man who has won it all at the highest level is an invaluable advantage.

When Hart asked Guehi about Toure, the defender couldn’t stop praising the legend. He told TNT Sports: “It’s unreal. Kolo is the nicest man ever.

“Feeding off someone like that is fantastic”

“I don’t think anyone has a bad word to say about him. But yeah, watching him as well, I mean, what he’s achieved in the game, you know, being an Invincible and the trophies that he’s won and the football clubs that he’s played for, you know, feeding off someone like that is fantastic.”

Guehi’s comments serve as a brilliant reminder of the enduring legacy left by the club legends. And no matter what, the current crop feeds off that history.

Time for Guehi to embrace the club ethos

From a fan’s perspective, hearing one of the current standout performers speak so highly of the club’s heritage is precisely what’s needed. Even more so heading into the final stretch of the season when silverware is on the line.

Guehi needed to shrug the 3-3 Everton game. There’s always a factor of leaning into losses, but he did well to move on.

The 25-year-old had a solid, disciplined game against Brentford, where City won 3-0. That win made sure that the pressure was placed back on Arsenal not to slip up.

Plus, the fact that Guehi is only just entering his prime years. So, maybe it’s now or never, when he can be fully integrated into the fabric of the club, and it seems he understands the weight of it now.

What’s next for Man City and Marc Guehi?

With all that in mind, Saturday couldn’t have come sooner for him. As we look toward the immediate future, Guehi and City’s priority is firmly fixed on the Wembley turf for tomorrow’s FA Cup final.

Pep Guardiola has already said that he has zero thoughts on anything else. That includes the league clash against Bournemouth, at least until the final whistle blows against Chelsea.

For Guehi, tomorrow presents another massive opportunity to add to his growing trophy collection. Securing back-to-back FA Cups with two different clubs would be quite the end to an unpredictable year.
