Severe thunderstorms are expected to roll in to Waterloo region and Guelph area Tuesday afternoon, Environment Canada warns.

The region is under two yellow alerts for a severe thunderstorm watch as well as a heat warning.

Thunderstorms could begin Tuesday afternoon starting around 2 p.m. and lasting into the evening. Storms could produce “Ping-Pong-sized” hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes, according to the weather agency.

“Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat with these storms,” the statement from Environment Canada says. “Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.”

It’s recommended that people take shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches.
