Why Rashee Rice will miss Chiefs OTAs
NBC 5 reported on Tuesday that court documents in Dallas County showed that Rice tested positive for THC, which was a a violation of his probation for charges related to the multi-car crash in Dallas in 2024.
Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail and be released on June 16, per NBC 5. He was reportedly booked at the Dallas County jail around 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
With the Chiefs’ OTAs set to begin on May 26 and run through late-May and early-June, then mandatory minicamp arriving on June 9, Rice is set to be absent as Kansas City makes its early preparations for the 2026 season.
Why was Rashee Rice on probation?
Rice has been on probation since July 2025, when he pleaded guilty to two third-degree felonies: one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and one count of racing on a highway causing bodily injury.
He was sentenced by a Dallas County judge to five years of probation, 30 days of jail time and ordered to pay around $115,000 to the victims of his March 2024 high-speed, hit-and-run car crash.
Now, Rice’s reported probation violation for testing positive for THC will result in 30 days of jail time.
Rashee Rice suspension
Rice also missed the first six games of the 2025 NFL season after the league found that he had violated its personal conduct policy in connection to the March 2024 hit-and-run crash.
The Chiefs wide receiver had reportedly been driving a Lamborghini Urus in Dallas at speeds around 120 mph at the time of causing a multi-car crash, and Rice then left the scene of the accident before police arrived, prosecutors said. He later took responsibility for the crash in a statement.
“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas,” Rice said in the statement released by his attorney, per NFL.com. “There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”
Rice later pleaded guilty to the two third-degree felonies, and he made his return for the Chiefs from suspension in October 2025. Over eight games last season, he finished with 571 yards and five touchdowns.
