Carney says not to ‘overplay the importance’ of paused U.S. military board

Anonymous, you must not be reading much. Carney has not been sitting on his hands and has more skill and experience in one hand than PP has in his whole body. Carney is also nothing like Trudea – who did more damage than you seem to remember – driving up immigration without proper oversight or a workforce strategy which contributed even more to inflation and housing challenges. Carney has done several things:
1. Diversifying Canada’s trade relationships beyond the U.S. Carney has made reducing Canada’s dependence on the American market a central economic priority. His government expanded trade and investment efforts with the European Union, Indo-Pacific countries, ASEAN nations, and India.
This matters because Canada remains highly vulnerable to U.S. tariffs, protectionism, and political instability. Broadening export markets helps reduce that risk.
2. Positioning Canada as a critical-minerals and energy superpower. Canada has aggressively promoted itself internationally as a stable supplier of LNG, uranium, lithium, nickel, copper, and rare earth minerals.
As Western countries try to reduce reliance on China and Russia for strategic resources, Canada has become more economically valuable to allies like Japan, South Korea, and Germany. This gives Canada stronger geopolitical and economic leverage independent of the U.S.
3. Restoring international investor confidence in Canada. Carney’s background as former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England immediately increased Canada’s credibility with global investors and financial institutions. Internationally, Canada is increasingly viewed as politically stable, financially credible, and relatively predictable compared with several Western economies.
4. Building stronger economic and defence ties with Europe and Indo-Pacific allies. Carney has pushed Canada closer economically and strategically to Europe and key Indo-Pacific democracies. This includes defence cooperation, supply-chain agreements, infrastructure investment, and advanced manufacturing partnerships.
5. Promoting Canada as a destination for AI, clean tech, and advanced manufacturing. Carney has heavily marketed Canada internationally as a safe and stable place for AI development, data centres, battery manufacturing, clean technology, and advanced industrial investment.
