More than 170,000 rode the REM on the first weekend of the West Island branch

The newest branch of the REM proved popular this past weekend, according to ridership numbers unveiled by the operator on Tuesday.

In a social media post, the REM thanked people who came out to try the Anse-à-l’Orme branch over the weekend. Access was free for the four newest stations located on the West Island, adjacent to Highway 40.

“Thank you for coming out in such large numbers,” the REM wrote on social media Tuesday. “More than 170,000 people visited the network, We were happy to meet people passionate about transit, curious young people and REM regulars. This is the first major rapid transit project to serve (this part of) the West Island. “

Those who attended weekend events were given passports that they could get stamped at each station and paper models of trains. The trains were free to ride at the four new stations only on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are now accepting passengers who pay full fares, which are the same rate as it costs to travel on other means of transit within the same zone.

Pricing is available on the ARTM’s website.
