Tuchel hails ‘brilliant’ Steele and thanks ‘supportive’ Albion

Thomas Tuchel says Jason Steele has been “brilliant” with England after handing him a World Cup role.
The Albion man will travel to the USA as a training goalkeeper, working alongside the three named in Tuchel’s 26-man squad – Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton) and James Trafford (Manchester City).

He had a similar role around recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.
Steele has been praised for his efforts around the squad throughout his time with the Seagulls, when he has played for Chris Hughton, Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi and now Fabian Hurzeler.
He will be on the plane with a squad which does NOT include his Albion colleagues Danny Welbeck or Jack Hinshelwood, both of whom came under consideration.
Tuchel told a press conference: “We chose three goalkeepers plus Jason Steele.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank Jason for being brilliant and thank Brighton for being so co-operative and supportive.”

Tuchel’s individual selections have come under fire from some fans and media.
But the England boss said: “Teams win championships, it is as simple as that.

“I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.
“What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.”
