Cardinals-Reds Washed Out on Friday; Day/Night Doubleheader on Saturday

With heavy rains hitting the Cincinnati area on Friday, the first Cardinals-Reds showdown of the season was postponed until Saturday.

The two teams will play a split doubleheader on Saturday — with the first game starting at 12:10 PM CT. Fans holding tickets to the Friday game may present their tickets to Saturday’s first game.  Gates at Great American Ball Park will open to the general public at 12:10 PM ET/11:10 AM CT.

The timing for Saturday’s originally scheduled game remains unchanged at 7:15 PM ET/6:15 PM CT.

Andre Pallante (4-4, 4.04) will face Reds’ right-hander Chris Paddack (0-5, 7.07 ERA) in the first game.  Kyle Leahy (5-3, 3.94 ERA) will face Reds’ righty Chase Petty (0-0, 4.76 ERA) in the nightcap.

The Cardinals (28-21) are 5-2 this season against the NL Central with all the games coming against the Pirates. The Cards pulled of their 14th come-from-behind victory of the season on Tuesday and won 9-6 in 10 innings when Ivan Herrera hit the first walk-off homer of his MLB career. However, the Cardinals five-game winning streak against the Pirates was halted on Tuesday and Wednesday when their offense was mostly shutdown by Pittsburg’s Carmen Mlodzinsky and Braxton Ashcraft.

Prior to that series, the Cardinals had gone nearly a month without a series loss, going 4-0-2 against the Pirates, Dodgers, Brewers, Padres, Athletics and Royals.

The Cards are in a stretch of 12 straight games against division rivals. After facing the Reds in Cincinnati, the Cardinals travel to Milwaukee for three games against the streaking Brewers. They are back at Busch Stadium for three games against the skidding Cubs from May 29-31.

The Cardinals are 15-8 on the road this season, the best road mark among NL Central teams. Only the Braves (19-8), Dodgers (16-9) and Athletics (16-12) have more road victories than the Cardinals. The Guardians (15-12), Nationals (15-10) and Padres (15-8) have also played well on the road.

The Reds started the season well, but they have fallen on hard times in May. They dropped their first eight games of May and are just 6-13 in the month even after winning their last two games against the Phillies. Exclusively in home games, the Reds are just 13-11.

Bryan Torres, 28, is in line to make his MLB debut after being promoted by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. He hit .336 with a .454 on-base percentage in 36 games with Triple-A Memphis this season.

As reported by Roundtable Sports on Wednesday, the Cardinals did indeed promote rookie second baseman Bryan Torres from Triple-A, Torres, who spent the past 11 years in the Minor Leagues. He replaced outfielder Nathan Church, who was placed on the 10-day Injured List — retroactive to May 21 — because of a left shoulder strain.
