Real Madrid’s No. 1 transfer target for Jose Mourinho is now obvious

Real Madrid are one match away from the finishing line of a disappointing season. But the good news for fans is that the club are almost set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager.
The experienced tactician certainly knows a thing or two about winning trophies and is someone Los Blancos could use after going empty-handed in back-to-back campaigns without any silverware.
It is expected that Mourinho will ask the board to add some new faces to the Real roster in the upcoming summer transfer window. On that note, it has now become quite obvious who the No. 1 transfer target for the Portuguese manager could be after arriving at the Bernabeu.
The player in question is none other than Josko Gvardiol. It was earlier reported that Real are interested in the Manchester City superstar, and there are multiple reasons why the Croatian defender could be a great signing for the Spanish giants.
Real will need to pull out all the stops to bring Josko Gvardiol to the Bernabeu
Real have struggled defensively for quite some time now. Notably, Carlo Ancelotti pushed the club to make some signings for Real’s backline during his tenure, but his requests were in vain.
Los Blancos did bring in Trent Alexander Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras last summer. But only Arnold has impressed so far, while the rest of the positions could clearly do with some reinforcements.
That is why Gvardiol comes into the picture. The Croatian international is currently one of the best defenders in the world. Moreover, he can play at both left-back and centre-back, two problematic areas for Real.
With Ferland Mendy struggling with fitness and the core of the defence in shambles, few would argue against the idea that the arrival of a versatile player like Gvardiol would be huge.
Moreover, the Croatian has built an impressive CV at a young age. In fact, the 24-year-old has won the Premier League once already along with other major trophies.
He has been an important part of City’s squad since joining the club in 2023. The Croatian international has appeared in a total of 121 matches for the Citizens.
Real Madrid have a realistic chance of getting this move over the line
Gvardiol’s time on the pitch has been impacted recently. This is due to the fact that City added Rayan Ait Nouri and Marc Guehi to their already stacked defensive unit. Additionally, the rise of Nico OReilly at the left-back position has not helped the situation either for the Croatian.
So it would obviously be a win-win situation for both parties if the move becomes a reality. Firstly, Real’s need for an versatile young defender would be fulfilled. On the other hand, Gvardiol would also likely want as many minutes on the pitch as possible, especially at this stage of his career.
That said, these are just speculations at this point in time. And it will be interesting to see what lies ahead in the future for the Croatian defender.
