Rangers are reportedly looking to revive their January interest in out of contract Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.

The Black Cats midfielder was high up on Danny Rohl’s Ibrox wish list in the winter window, but opted to try his liuck in the English Championship with Ipswich Town.

The 24-year-old helped The Tractor Boys secure their return to the Premier League – his second consecutive promotion from the English Championship after captaining the Mackems to promotion joy last term.

But Neil failed to hold down a regular starting spot at Portman Road and is unlikely to be brought back to the club this summer.

The door is now open for Rangers after Neil confirmed his Sunderland exit in an emotional social media post.

The Stadium of Light academy graduate said: “Above everything else, I would like to take this opportunity say thank you.

“To my coaches and team-mates, past and present, who were not only good professionals but great people, and to the wider staff and fans for supporting me throughout all the experiences we shared together.

“I’m proud of what we achieved during my time at the club and for playing my part in taking it back to where it belongs, the Premier League.

“Captaining Sunderland was a boyhood dream that came true, and as a supporter for life, I’m excited to see what’s next on the journey.”

The Sunderland Echo report that Neil will “hold talks” with the Glasgow giants as he considers his options with his contract running down.

It is said a move to Rangers could appeal to the playmaker as it offers the chance to compete for silverware and European football.

Speculation around Neil follows the imminent arrival of Hearts’ captain Lawrence Shankland – who is set to become Rohl’s first summer signing.

A contract clause is set to be triggered that will allow the Scotland striker to rip up his Tynecastle deal and move to his boyhood heroes for nothing.
