Open-air bar and disco returns to Southend Pier for huge second year

On the Decks is back after its introduction last year, showcasing DJs, live music, dancing and cocktails at the end of the world’s longest pleasure pier.

Starting at noon today until 7pm, the event will be back again on Bank Holiday Monday from 1pm until 7pm, offering “epic” views of the Thames Estuary to be taken in with a relaxing drink from its bar which is open all afternoon.

Families and friends said the event was the perfect treat to end a trip to the end of the pier, with deck chairs to bask in the sun and colourful beach huts to relax in and take in the moment.

“The atmosphere is fantastic with the live music and bar, and the whole family are having a great time.

“The train ride along the pier was a real highlight for us all as well.”

Sally and Carmel who travelled from Chelmsford, who said the event was a “fabulous” way to crown their afternoon on the pier.

Sally said: “On the Decks is such a brilliant idea we’re having a fabulous afternoon sitting in the deckchairs with a drink, listening to the music and enjoying the atmosphere.

Carmel said: “We both love soul music, so we even had a little dance. We’ll definitely be coming back more over the summer.”

The event was introduced last year to huge success, with Southend Council bringing together input from cultural voices across Southend to tap into the potential of an unused space on the pier.

Transforming the space into an open-air disco completed a vision to recapture the bustling party atmosphere the iconic pier was famous for in years gone by.

Matt Dent, Southend Labour councillor for business, culture and tourism, said: “On the Decks was one of the highlights of last summer on the Pier, and I’m delighted to be able to bring it back for a second year.

“With the bank holiday weekend bringing sunshine and warm weather, it’s a fantastic opportunity for residents to head down to the Pier, have a drink, a dance, and enjoy everything the Estuary has to offer.”
