Staff and volunteers keep BCP beaches welcoming over bank holiday weekend

Hundreds of thousands of visitors came to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole over the spring bank holiday and into May half-term.
BCP Council said that behind the scenes, a huge team effort has helped make this possible.
From council staff and seafront teams to the RNLI and emergency services including Dorset Police, all partners have worked tirelessly to make sure everyone could enjoy their visit safely and leave with great memories.
Over the bank holiday weekend, 64 lost children or vulnerable adults were reunited with their families, thanks to joint working and a swift response from RNLI lifeguards and council seafront staff.
On busy weekends, teams continue to collect waste via tractors and surf rakes until the beaches become too busy with visitors. Litter-pickers then take over until the beach is cleared.
The cleansing team begins collecting rubbish at 4am every morning during the summer, and over the course of the season will remove thousands of tons of waste from the beaches across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s seafront.
BCP Council said: “We would encourage all visitors to be responsible for their own rubbish and take it home with them if necessary.”
The coastline, from Hamworthy to Highcliffe, has remained popular with the seafront team on hand from 4am until late at night, to get the beaches ready for visitors every single day. They’ve been joined by Dorset Police, as part of their dedicated beach patrols, and the RNLI to keep everyone safe.
With 15 miles of coastline, six Blue Flag beaches for 2026 and more warm weather expected, council teams and partners remain ready – working together to keep the area safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
Cllr Richard Herrett, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for destination, leisure and commercial operations, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the teams who work so hard to make Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole such a welcoming place.
“This weekend we have seen record-breaking temperatures, and I would personally like to thank every one of our staff and volunteers, who have gone above and beyond in demanding conditions to help our residents and visitors have a safe and enjoyable time.”
