Behind home runs from Derek Williams and Vance Sheahan and a five-run eighth inning, the Miami Hurricanes baseball team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 10-5 victory over Troy Friday night at Condron Family Ballpark.
Williams finished with two hits and three RBI, while Sheahan added a solo homer as Miami improved to 39-18 on the season and advanced into the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Gainesville Regional.
Miami jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning after Sheahan’s solo shot and Williams’ 389-foot three-run homer to left center. Troy battled back with three runs across the fourth and fifth innings before the Hurricanes added an insurance run in the seventh on a throwing error by the Trojan catcher. Miami would then go on to plate five runs in the eighth inning, giving just enough breathing room to secure the victory.
