‘No smoke’ to rumours linking Maple Leafs to Carle for head coaching vacancy, Johnston says

There is no validity to the rumours circulating that connect the Toronto Maple Leafs and David Carle, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported on Sunday.

Carle, 36, is the head coach at University of Denver, and has led that program to three National Championships over the past five years. He has also led the United States to two titles at the World Juniors in his coaching career.

The Maple Leafs have been searching for a head coach since they decided to part ways with Craig Berube earlier in May. This after the team brought in John Chayka to be the new general manager early in May.

The GM said he will conduct a “wide-ranging” search for Berube’s replacement.

“We’ll take our time and try to get it right,” he said. “It’s the most critical decision as a general manager.”

Berube went 84-62-18 with Toronto, but the Maple Leafs were just 32-36-14 this past season. The drop in points — from 108 to 78 — was the team’s largest year-over-year points decline.
