Seattle Mariners win on walk-off for 3rd time in 4 games

The Seattle Mariners are showing their flair for the dramatic on their winning streak.

Cole Young came through with an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Mariners a 3-2 walkoff victory in the series opener against the New York Mets on Monday night.

The win was the seventh straight for Seattle (32-29), which has surged over .500 and into a somewhat comfortable lead in the AL West over the stretch.

Young served a cutter from Mets left-hander A.J. Minter the other way to left field for Monday’s winning hit. Randy Arozarena easily made it home after he stole third base in the previous Mariners plate appearance.

Monday was the third time in the last four games that the Mariners walked it off for the win in an extra frame. Arozarena, who scored the winning run Monday night, had a walkoff RBI double against Arizona on Friday, and Victor Robles had a walkoff infield single that plated Arozarena in another win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Gabe Speier earned the win for Seattle after working a perfect 10th inning with two strikeouts, one of which was Juan Soto, to strand the Mets’ automatic runner at second base.

The Mariners ended the Mets’ own winning streak at four games.

Game 2 of the series will be at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday night, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 5:30 with the pregame show.
