Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign midfielder Ederson, in an early statement of intent ahead of next season.
The 26-year-old Brazilian will move to Old Trafford for €40.5million ($47m; £35m) fixed fee plus €4.5m ($5m; £4m) in potential add-ons.
Personal terms are in place on a proposed contract until June 2030, while there is an option to extend by an additional 12 months.
Ederson must still undergo a medical and all parties intend to complete the switch in early July.
He has long been targeted by a host of top clubs but prioritised United and, given he would become a free agent in the summer of 2027, they were able to negotiate a price considerably lower than figures quoted in previous markets.
It would represent a purposeful start to the transfer window by United, who needed to bolster in midfield amid Casemiro’s exit.
They are likely to seek further reinforcements in that area of the pitch, given the possibility of further departures and Michael Carrick’s side qualifying for the 2026-27 Champions League.
Ederson a player coaches adore
Analysis by Mark Carey and Laurie Whitwell
Ederson is active in hoovering up danger — clocking up his fair share of tackles and interceptions — but also reads the game well with a high volume of ball recoveries to get his side back on the front foot.
The Italy-based Brazil international is arguably stronger at retaining possession than countryman Casemiro, often keeping his passes shorter to feet with an ability to punch the ball forward to runners ahead of him.
Ederson is the sort of player managers adore, patrolling the pitch between both boxes. He might not always get the headlines, but he is a crucial cog in the wider team dynamic that allows others around him to play at full tilt.
