The leaks were real: God of War Laufey is all about Faye, and it’s coming to PlayStation 5 ‘soon’

Sony Santa Monica has announced its next God of War game. It’s known as God of War Laufey, and was revealed as part of this evening’s PlayStation State of Play.
As the name suggests, the upcoming release will mark a significant change for the studio, and place players in the shoes of Kratos’ wife Faye – played by Deborah Ann Woll – as the main character (something which was rumoured ahead of this evening’s announcement). Sony Santa Monica’s two previous God of War entries focused on Kratos’ Norse escapades with his and Faye’s son, Atreus. This time, we will all be travelling to the afterlife of the gods – Everywhen – with Faye. Everywhen is where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in “a land overflowing with dangerous magic”.

The studio shared the news with a 20 minute gameplay trailer, which began with Kratos and Atreus preparing to say farewell to Faye. We then meet a dead Faye in the afterlife, and that’s where things really kick off. Here, she meets some rather nasty deities, as well as a talking sword (well, it is the enchanted ribbons on the sword that are talking, and they are voiced by Perlina Lau) and a gelatinous cube (voiced by Jack Quaid) which come to her aid (this also leaked ahead of the game’s reveal).
“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning,” reads the official blurb. “Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods.”
The upcoming game promises “intimate, brutal combat” in a “rich, beautiful world”, with the story at its heart. Faye will fight with both a sword and magic in God of War Laufey. “In the Everywhen, Faye can strike her golden palm at a foe with such force it detaches their soul from their body,” Sony explained in a new blog post about the upcoming game. “From there, Faye can attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and more — opening up combos and creative uses that we hope players will have a lot of fun mastering.”
As for when we can expect to get our hands on God of War Laufey , it is currently in development for PlayStation 5, but lacks a release date.

Elsewhere in God of War news, Amazon has been steadily rounding out the cast for its upcoming live-action adaptation. The most recent new member is Lost and For All Mankind alum Sonya Walger, who will play Queen of the Valkyries, Freya. Behind the camera, meanwhile, Amazon’s God of War adaptation includes former Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore, who will serve as showrunner on the upcoming series, and Emmy winning Shōgun director Frederick E.O. Toye. We recently got our first look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus in Amazon’s live-action TV series, with an image reminiscent of the opening to 2018’s God of War video game.
