I-290 traffic: Eisenhower Expressway police bomb squad investigation shuts down lanes between 25th Avenue, Wolf Road | LIVE

WESTCHESTER, Ill. (WLS) — An investigation has shut down lanes on Interstate 290 Thursday morning in Chicago’s west suburbs.

The investigation has blocked lanes in both directions between 25th Avenue and Wolf Road.

Chopper 7 flew above the scene as an SUV in a middle lane sat with its windows blown out. A bomb squad unit from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office appeared to investigate the SUV.

An investigation shut down the Eisenhower Expressway Thursday morning.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also responded to the scene. The incident started at around 10 a.m. Further details on what led up to the investigation were not immediately available.

An apparent bomb squad responded to an incident on I-290 Thursday.

Illinois State Police said they were investigating between Mannheim Road and Interstate 294.

Mannheim to I-290 is closed. Mannheim Road over I-290 is closed. Eastbound Interstate 88 to eastbound I-290 is closed, state police said.

There is a massive backup on the highway.

Bystanders got out of their vehicles amid a lengthy shutdown of I-290.

Alternate routes include Roosevelt Road, 31st Street and Cermak Avenue.

The public is asked to avoid the area, as extended closures are expected.
