Woman beaten in downtown Portland dies from injuries, suspect charged with murder

A woman who was brutally beaten on the streets of downtown Portland last month has died from her injuries, Portland Police announced Saturday.

Police said Rebecca A. Lange, 44, died in a hospital Wednesday from the injuries she sustained in the May 22 assault.

On Friday, a grand jury updated an indictment for the suspect, Roberto M. Vasquez, 64, charging him with murder, assault and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

On May 22, paramedics responded to a report of an injured woman on a sidewalk along Northwest Naito Parkway in Old Town and transported her to a nearby hospital. Investigators determined that she had been beaten with a blunt object, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

Officers surrounded a nearby apartment building where they believed the suspect, Roberto M. Vasquez, 64, had fled. After securing a warrant to search the building, police arrested Vasquez without incident.

Police said the investigation into the assault is ongoing. The latest charges carried domestic violence designations, but police did not say how Lange and Vasquez knew each other.
