Note: ‘The Golden Bachelor’ Season 2 spoilers ahead!
The sophomore season of “The Golden Bachelor” kicked off before the first episode even aired, with the new rose-giver, Mel Owens, in the hot seat after he made disparaging comments about women of a certain age.
While Owens, 66, in the lead-up to the premiere, repeatedly apologized for his gaffe, it was still the main subject of the first half-hour of the Sept. 24 episode when he was confronted by his potential partners several times as they walked up to the Bachelor mansion in their sparkly gowns.
Once the apologies were done, it was time to hand out the roses, and a total of 11 women were eliminated during the first two rose ceremonies, including the oldest woman in the room.
In the upcoming episode, 12 women will take the stage at the historic Bellwether Theater in Los Angeles for a “no-holds-barred comedy roast, co-hosted by comedian Jared Freid, where only the funniest earns a one-on-one dinner with Mel,” according to ABC.
For the one-on-one dinner, “one lucky lady” will be “whisked away for a culinary adventure with Mel at Hollywood’s famed Petit Trois, featuring a private cooking lesson with Michelin-starred chef Ludo Lefebvre,” the TV network said.
The upcoming episode will also feature a surprise appearance from Season 1’s Kathy and Susan, who will “host an unforgettable slumber party filled with matching PJs, spicy truth or dare, and heartfelt advice that could change everything.”
“With emotions rising and connections deepening, the women head into a high-stakes cocktail party where some take bold risks to make their move, but not everyone is ready to see Mel getting close with someone else,” the season’s synopsis adds.

Who is Season 2’s ‘Golden Bachelor’?
Season 2’s Golden Bachelor is Mel Owens, 66, a former NFL veteran turned lawyer.
Owens was born and raised in Detroit, and his “athleticism shone through from an early age,” ABC said about him in his bio.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, where he played college football, Owens was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
After retiring from football, Owens began his career as a lawyer, specializing in sports injuries.
“It was during this time that he met his first love, and together they had two sons,” Owens’ bio said, adding life later “took an unexpected turn” as his father passed and his marriage fell apart.
“Now, after several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship — sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple,” ABC said. “As the Golden Bachelor, he’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.”
