The ITV soap is exploring a new issue-based storyline as Charity was sexually assaulted by Dr Todd in Sunday’s episode (7 June).

In follow-on scenes tonight, Charity initially tries to carry on as normal – totally shocked by what’s happened to her.

With the rest of the Dingles distracted by Sarah Sugden’s 21st birthday party at The Woolpack, Charity soon decides to visit the local police station and report Dr Todd.

“It wasn’t a man – it was a woman,” Charity explains in an interview with DS Reid, who’s supportive and understanding. “Caitlin Todd. You don’t expect something like that from a woman. You think you’re safe. It wouldn’t even occur to me that I wasn’t, you know?

“And it’s not like this hasn’t happened to me before. It has – only with men. This time it was different. But at the same time, it wasn’t different at all. It was still terrifying.”

Later, Charity consents to a full medical examination as part of the police investigation. She’s told that this could provide vital evidence to build a case against Dr Todd.

The pub landlady then returns to the police interview room to record a formal statement about what happened.

“We’ll use any forensic evidence we’ve collected today, including your clothing, to help us in our investigation,” DS Reid explains.

“And we’ll also be arresting Caitlin Todd and bringing her in for questioning. Once we’ve conducted our enquiries with the suspect, we’ll review all the forensic evidence, and then we’ll send the file away to the CPS to see whether there’s enough evidence to charge her with sexual assault.”

Show bosses haven’t yet confirmed what the outcome will be for Dr Todd beyond this – or whether Charity will confide in any of her loved ones.

“Charity’s storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence, and though this heinous act is fundamentally about power, we’ll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman,” show producer Sophie Roper said last week.

“With little conversation surrounding female-on-female assault, we’ll explore the overwhelming feelings of isolation many survivors experience and will examine the disparity between the legal term sexual assault and the fact that many women in Charity’s position feel this minimises what’s happened to them, because they feel like they’ve been raped.

“Though difficult viewing at times, Charity’s resilience will inspire hope as she confronts what has happened to her.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
