Residents evacuate to rooftops amid extreme flash flooding in Lanesville, Indiana

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Residents in Lanesville, Indiana, are taking shelter on the roofs of their homes Tuesday afternoon because of extreme flash flooding.

According to emergency management officials, live power lines are in the floodwater and propane tanks are floating.

Right now, rescue crews from multiple counties are responding with boats to help reach people.

Highway 62 is blocked at the Floyd County line because of high water.

Shelbie Steele works at the First Harrison Bank on Highway 62 and told WDRB the bank was filling with water. Steele said three people were stuck in the bank, sitting on desks until first responders arrive in boats. She estimates more than three feet of water was rushing down Main Street.

Viewer-submitted videos and photos show heavy rain causing flooding across downtown Lanesville.

Officials said crews are staging at Lanesville High School. The gym is open for people who are evacuating and need to take shelter.

It was not immediately clear how much rain had fallen in Lanesville.
