After former Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa left the club nearing the all-time goal-scoring record held by Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi, Kickoff.com reveals which current player is getting closer.

Mabasa, at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, by his own admission, was looking forward to becoming Pirates’ all-time leading goal-scorer, as he was second on the list, after he had leapfrogged the late Lesley Manyathela and Phumlani Mkhize, both tied on 41 goals.

The 29-year-old scored four goals for the Buccaneers this past season, taking his overall tally to 50 goals, before he was loaned out to Stellenbosch in January 2026, as he was not receiving game-time.

The Soweto giants announced recently that they had parted ways with the Botshabelo native forward after his contract expired and was not renewed and the left-footed striker departed nine goals shy of breaking the all-time record still held by former midfielder Vilakazi (58) goals.

However, there is still a current player at Pirates, who has a chance to rewrite the goal-scoring history, forward Relebohile Mofokeng, should he remain at The Ghosts ahead of the 2026/27 season.

After scoring 11 goals in all competitions for The Mighty Bucs, his best season return since being promoted by the Black and White, Mofokeng took his overall tally to 29 goals and is closing-in on entering the top ten goal-scorers of all time at the club.

The 21-year-old needs six more goals at Pirates to leapfrog Thembinkosi Lorch and Kermit Erasmus, who both tied on 34 goals on number nine and ten respectively on the list.

And looking up, goal-scorers from number five downwards are only separated by three goals, with the likes of Steve Lekoelea (36 goals), Sibusiso Zuma (37 goals) and Andries Sebola (38 goals) completing the bottom five.
