The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Thursday night for parts of southeast Michigan, including six counties, as storms moved through the region.

The tornado watch is in effect until 2 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service office in Detroit/Pontiac.

The watch includes Bay, Genesee, Livingston, Midland, Saginaw, and Shiawassee counties.

Cities within the watch area include Bay City, Brighton, Durand, Flint, Fowlerville, Howell, Midland, Owosso, and Saginaw.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.

It does not mean a tornado has been spotted.

Forecasters said residents should stay alert, monitor weather updates, and be prepared to move to shelter if warnings are issued.
