Power restored to thousands after downed line causes fire at Duke Energy substation in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) — Power was restored Thursday afternoon to thousands of people in southern Indiana after a downed line sparked a fire at a Duke Energy substation.
According to the New Albany Fire Department, reports started coming in around 11:30 a.m. about smoke around the substation on Kenzig Road, near State Street and Binford Road just off Interstate 265 headed onto Paoli Pike.
Crews responding to the scene found a large area of brush on fire that was sparked by a large electrical line that broke and fell to the ground.
NAFD said several employees were working in the area when the powerline fell, but were not injured.
Crews contained the fire until Duke Energy was able to cut power to the downed line. Firefighters were then able to extinguish the fire, which was under control by 1 p.m.
At noon Thursday, about 4,140 people across New Albany and Floyds Knobs were without power because of the downed powerline. A Duke Energy spokesperson said power was restored by 3:30 p.m. They said one of the beams that sits on top of the powerlines broke, causing the outage.
No injuries were reported.
