Larin hails Saints for helping him rediscover scoring form ahead of World Cup

Larin is hoping to start for Jesse Marsch’s side against Bosnia and Herzegovina tonight (8pm) in their opening fixture of the tournament.

The 31 year old, Canada’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, arrives in a confident mood after netting nine times in 22 appearances for Saints.

Larin, who completed a permanent switch last week, believes he can carry that momentum into the World Cup and end a near two-year wait for an international goal.

“It’s going well. We are busy preparing for the first game against Bosnia,” Larin told Southampton’s in-house media ahead of the opening game.

“We are ready to take on other countries and play a home World Cup “It [loan at Saints] has given me great confidence.

“I’ve always known I could score goals – that was never the problem. It’s more about playing games and having a coach who trusted me to go and do that.

“Tonda was very important in helping me do that and a big part of my decision to join the club [in January]. It’s given me a lot of confidence to go out and bring it to the national team.

“When you are scoring, it doesn’t stop. The goals don’t stop for me. It’s a rhythm and [it gives you] a confidence to keep going.”

Canada also face Qatar on Thursday, June 18 (11pm) and Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24 (8pm). Both games take place in Vancouver.

Larin last scored for Canada against Panama on October 16, 2024 in an international friendly.
