Man drowns at Wilson Pond in Swanzey

SWANZEY, N.H. — A man is deceased, and a drowning investigation is underway in Swanzey.
At 3:36 p.m. Sunday, Marine Patrol officers were notified of a reported drowning at Wilson Pond.
The preliminary investigation has determined that the victim, identified as Fredy Gavilanes Jami, 42, of Ecuador, was swimming with three friends near the shoreline when he entered an area with a steep drop-off and went underwater unnoticed. When the other swimmers realized Gavilanes Jami was missing, they began calling for help. Bystanders in the area contacted 911 and attempted to assist, but were unable to bring him to shore.
The first officer to arrive on the scene, a member of the Swanzey Police Department, immediately entered the water, found Gavilanes Jami and removed him from the water. Emergency personnel performed lifesaving measures at the scene before Gavilanes Jami was transported to Cheshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
At this time, the death is not believed to be suspicious in nature. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Marine Patrol officers and troopers assigned to the Troop C barracks were assisted at the scene by members of the Swanzey police and fire departments, Keene Fire Rescue, Cheshire County EMS and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
