Dodge County Sheriff’s deputy hurt, suspect dead after Town of Elba shooting

ELBA, Wis. (WMTV) – A deputy with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office was hurt after being shot by a suspect in the Town of Elba, according to officials.

Deputies were called to River Run Dog Park just before 7 p.m. Sunday, for reports of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance and threatening people.

Authorities found the man when they arrived and tried to make contact with him. The suspect then shot at law enforcement, hitting a deputy.

The suspect ran back to his vehicle after the shooting, while deputies and police took cover.

The injured deputy was rescued and given medical care. He has serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and was taken to UW Hospital.

The deputy was released from the hospital early Monday morning after treatment, according to officials.

Other agencies were then called in for assistance, as authorities worked to take the suspect into custody.

When officials got close to the vehicle, the suspect was found dead inside.

Early investigations show the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered near the suspect, according to deputies.

The incident prompted a shelter-in-place order late Sunday night, as well as a road closure on Highway 73 between Highway 151 and the City of Columbus.

That order has now been lifted. Authorities believe there were no other suspects involved, and say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said no law enforcement fired their guns during the confrontation.

The situation is still being investigated as an officer-involved incident, with multiple agencies other than the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation.

The Columbus Police Department, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, CCSO Emergency Response Team, Dodge County Emergency Response Team, LifeStar EMS, Beaver Dam Fire Department, Beaver Dam Paramedics, and the Wisconsin State Patrol all assisted at the scene.

Officials said more information will be released in the coming days.
