Some new hydro poles going up soon downtown

East Street rebuild is going well despite rain delays, with underground work remaining the focus into next week

PUC line crews will move into the East Street road construction zone next week to begin replacing existing hydro poles with new ones north of Queen Street.

“Next week, installation of sanitary main will continue, and pending favourable weather, work could move on to storm sewer and watermain work at the lower end of East Street,” says Dan Bertolo from Tulloch Engineering, which is overseeing the project.

“Although hampered a little by rain this week, work on the project moved steadily forward,” Bertolo says in an update to neighbouring residents and businesses.

“The work consisting mainly of installation of sanitary sewer, is progressing well and will continue into next week.

“As you may have noticed, the Bay Street through traffic lane is a little more restricted. The sewer bypass discharge had to be relocated to a maintenance hole further out into Bay Street. Traffic seems to have adapted nicely.

“Next week installation of sanitary main will continue, and pending favourable weather. work could move on to storm sewer and watermain work at the lower end of East Street.

“There are no changes anticipated to the traffic controls or access next week. Queen Street continues to remain open,” Bertolo said in his update.

The reconstruction of East Street from Bay Street to Wellington includes:

  • replacing storm and sanitary sewers
  • replacing water main infrastructure
  • granular road base
  • asphalt roadway surface
  • curbs, boulevards, and sidewalks
  • landscaping and street furnishings will also be incorporated to improve overall streetscape

The work is expected to reach substantial completion by late fall 2026.

Final work, including the surface lift of asphalt, is scheduled for completion next year.
