Samuel to make Wimbledon debut against 15th seed Mensik

DORSET’s Toby Samuel will face 15th seed Jakub Mensik in the first round of the Wimbledon men’s singles as he makes his main‑draw debut.
It comes after a year in which he has rocketed into the world’s top 150 and turned Challenger dominance into ATP‑level breakthroughs.

Samuel, who is from St Ives near Ferndown, has been awarded a wildcard into the Championships on the back of an outstanding 18‑month surge that has seen him climb more than 1,700 places in the rankings and collect a string of titles on the ATP Challenger Tour.
Since late 2024 he has put together multiple extended winning streaks, including back‑to‑back Challenger trophies in Soma Bay and Manama at the end of last season and a further pair of titles in Hersonissos, Greece, earlier this year that carried him into the top 200 for the first time.
In total he has won four Challenger singles events since November, underpinning a rise to a career‑high ranking of No 142 and cementing his status as Britain’s No 4.

That form translated onto the Grand Slam stage in May when the 23-year-old qualified for the Roland Garros main draw, coming through three rounds of qualifying to reach his first singles appearance at a major.
His run in Paris included comeback wins over higher‑ranked opposition, culminating in a final‑round victory against Gonzalo Bueno, before he lost to eighth seed Alex de Minaur in the opening round but banked valuable experience in Grand Slam conditions.
He became only the fourth British man in 50 years to come through qualifying at Roland Garros, a statistic that has helped mark him out as one of the LTA’s most significant emerging prospects.

On grass, Samuel has backed up that progress with a breakthrough week at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, where he reached his first ATP Tour semi‑final.
Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, he received a first‑round bye before recording his first tour‑level win with a straight‑sets victory over world No 54 Thiago Agustín Tirante, 6‑1, 7‑6, in the second round.
He followed up by beating eighth seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6‑3, 6‑4 to secure the biggest win of his career by ranking and his first victory over a top‑50 player, then pushed Zizou Bergs to three sets in the semi‑final before losing 4‑6, 7‑6, 6‑2.

Those Eastbourne results, layered on top of his Challenger success and Roland Garros run, were explicitly cited by the LTA when confirming Samuel’s Wimbledon wildcard.
Samuel is part of a 50‑strong British contingent at this year’s Championships, with Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie leading the home challenge in the men’s singles and Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter among the headline names in the women’s draw.
Samuel will take to Court 3 on Tuesday to play Mensik.
