King Charles is taking a huge gamble – this changes everything for Prince Harry and Prince William

Following reports that he has personally paid for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security and has secured the Sussexes a royal residence for their upcoming UK trip, it has become clear that King Charles has been the driving force behind his son’s return.

The monarch is widely reported to wish to reunite with Harry and to spend time nurturing a bond with his grandchildren – Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five – who he has not seen in person since the late Queen’s jubilee in June 2022; the weekend also marking Lilibet’s first birthday, which they celebrated at their former Windsor home of Frogmore Cottage.

Their reunion is no doubt set to be an emotional one, but we’re now told how Charles’ joy at seeing his grandchildren remains overshadowed by the hurt he feels over the deep divide between his two sons, Harry and Prince William, who are today all but strangers following a six-year rift.

So much so, that a source reveals how the monarch intends to step in and bring his feuding sons together once and for all by inviting them to come face-to-face during Harry’s visit in July.

An insider says, ‘Charles has become increasingly emotional about the situation between William and Harry because, from his point of view, far too much time has already been lost. There was a period where he accepted that neither side was ready to move forward, but he’s now become convinced that if this family is ever going to heal, somebody has to step in.

‘He’s mellowed considerably and keeps telling William that carrying around this level of resentment is helping nobody. In Charles’ mind, July presents the best opportunity they’re likely to get, and he doesn’t want it wasted. He knows there’s every chance the meeting could be uncomfortable, but he firmly believes it’s now or never.’

Meanwhile, given William’s reported reaction to the news that not only will Harry be returning – but that they will receive the royal treatment as provided by the King when they land back on UK soil – Charles could have his work cut out.

William, 44, is reported to have been so put out by the news that he has threatened to ‘boycott’ family events at Sandringham for the foreseeable future and is said to have made a swift exit from the Trooping the Colour parade at Buckingham Palace last weekend, avoiding the annual family meal that traditionally follows.

One royal watcher summarised, ‘Make no mistake, this is a huge victory for Harry, a massive humiliation for William and a gigantic political gamble (which I suspect won’t pay off) for the King.’

Now we’re told that William remains adamant that the Sussexes can’t be trusted and, alongside Camilla, feels that welcoming Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, back into the royal fold would be a ‘huge gamble’ and one that could have wide-reaching repercussions.

‘William and Camilla think the whole idea is complete lunacy. They’ve both warned Charles countless times that he’s setting himself up for disaster; that Harry and Meghan can’t be trusted,’ the source says.

‘William is still livid and can’t understand why his father keeps extending olive branches. As far as he’s concerned, Harry is beyond hope. Camilla isn’t much more enthusiastic and has made no secret of her belief that Charles is taking a huge gamble.

‘But Charles has dug his heels in. He’s reached the point where he believes the feud is damaging the family far more than any awkward reunion ever could.’

Shedding light on the stark reality of Harry and William’s heartbreaking rift is the fact that, come September, it will have been four years since the two, once inseparable brothers, are believed to have spoken a single word to one another.

Having been forced together for perhaps the final time to mark the passing of their grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, at her funeral in 2022, the chasm between the siblings appears only to have widened with widespread reports that William could even strip Harry and Meghan of their royal titles when he takes over the throne.

Meanwhile, Harry previously revealed how Charles had begged his sons, ‘Please boys, don’t make my final years a misery’, when the trio attended the funeral of Prince Philip in 2021.

But five years on, and Harry and William’s feud is not only more bitter than ever, but also comes amidst the King’s own battle with cancer, for which he continues to receive treatment.

Now the source says that Charles is insistent that this reunion is in everyone’s best interests and sees William’s threats over Harry’s return as ‘petulant’ and ‘ridiculous’.

We’re told, ‘Charles is tired of defending his position on this matter, he says the decision has been made in the family’s best interests, and if William continues to fight him on that, then he’s being petulant and obstructive.

‘All this talk that William is now threatening to boycott Sandringham is utterly ridiculous and over the top. In his view, he assumes it’s something that was said in the heat of the moment, and once the dust settles, William will hopefully calm down and start to see common sense.’

They add, ‘Charles is determined to force it through. He’s certain that Harry can be talked into it, and once they’re in the same room, it’ll be a case of them finally opening their hearts and dropping their respective grievances, preferably one-on-one, though he is more than willing to sit in and act as a de facto mediator.’

Meanwhile, in a heartbreakingly poignant twist, the 30th anniversary of William and Harry’s mother, Princess Diana’s tragic death, next year could also play a role in finally bringing the brothers back together.

Having been an incredibly protective and doting mother, Diana’s former butler and close friend, Paul Burrell, previously said the Princess would have been ‘devastated’ by their rift.

He added, ‘If their mother were here today, she would bring them back together…It was very important to her that they stayed close’.

And the source says this sentiment is shared by their father, who, following his 2024 cancer diagnosis, knows that time is precious.

‘He’s certain that peace between the brothers is what his mother would have wanted, as well as Diana and many other figures inside the Firm, both past and present,’ the source says.

‘And if it takes a forced peace or intervention of sorts for that to finally happen, then so be it. He’s got several weeks to work on William, and despite the current resistance, he’s confident that ultimately he’ll be able to pull this off.

‘He intends to remind both his sons that life is too short for grudges, plus the painful reality is that he himself is still fighting cancer, and it’s his greatest wish that his sons find it in their hearts to move forward.’

However, William is widely reported to remain ‘furious’ over his brother and Meghan’s tell-alls, including Harry’s accusation in his memoir Spare that William had assaulted him during an argument over Meghan. And to this day, we’re told that he sees Harry’s ‘disrespect’ as ‘unforgivable’ and has moved past the idea that his younger brother will ever apologise.

The insider says, ‘Of course, William’s position is that this sentimentality all belongs in a bygone era, that Harry has changed irredeemably, and there’s far too much mud under the bridge for any hope of a respectful relationship.

‘Ultimately, his brother has disrespected the Crown to an unprecedented and unforgivable degree. The only way he’d rethink that stance is if Harry were to grovel for an apology and make the type of concessions and promises that he’s totally incapable of – at least, whilst Meghan’s still on the scene.

‘At this point in time, he’s totally dead set against any face time whatsoever, so his father can push for him to meet with Harry all he wants, he’s simply not interested, and it’s hard to see his position changing.’
