Capitals sign D Desharnais to four-year deal; ink D Holl to one-year, $900K contract

The Washington Capitals have made a pair of blueline additions on the opening day of free agency, signing Vincent Desharnais and Justin Holl.

Desharnais’s deal is for four years with an AAV of $4.2 million while Holl’s is a one-year deal for $900,000, per TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

Desharnais, 30, registered a goal and seven points in 53 games with the San Jose Sharks last season while averaging 18:11 of ice time.

The 6-foot-7, right-shot blueliner is coming off a two-year, $4 million contract that carried a cap hit of $2 million.

Desharnais was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in March in exchange for a draft pick.

Drafted 183rd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2016, Desharnais has two goals and 26 points in 218 career games split between the Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Penguins, and Sharks.

Holl, 34, spent the 2025-26 season split between the St. Louis Blues and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

He skated in nine games with the Blues, scoring a goal with one assists.

Holl appeared in 41 games with Grand Rapids, scoring two goals with 14 points.

The Tonka Bay, Minn., native has skated in 405 career NHL games, scoring 14 goals with 97 points, split between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Blues.
