The Vancouver Canucks are closing in on a Pettersson trade, it’s just not the one everyone anticipated.
And J.T. Miller can be at ease.
The Canucks are in trade talks with the New York Rangers regarding defenceman Marcus Pettersson, according to NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman.

The 30-year-old defenceman struggled last season, though he wasn’t alone on the last-place Canucks. Pettersson was acquired on Feb. 1, 2025, as part of a package that included the first-round draft pick the Canucks got one day earlier in the J.T. Miller trade.
Pettersson is entering the second year of a six-year contract that carries a $5.5 million cap hit. In order to be traded, the Swedish blueliner must waive his full no-movement clause.
The trade is not yet official, and the return has yet to be reported.
