DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – On Thursday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced it was elevating its fire restrictions to Stage 2 for all of unincorporated Douglas County, including Larkspur and Castle Pines, and canceling planned fireworks shows.
The Sheriff’s Office said the decision was made after a “comprehensive review of local environmental data, including weather patterns, dangerously low fuel moisture levels, and the availability of state resources.”
The following activities are banned:
- Open burning of any kind.
- Use of fireworks, including professional firework displays.
- Use of fires in chimineas, portable fireplaces, or patio fire pits.
- Campfires at developed campgrounds or picnic areas.
- Use of model rockets.
Activities that are allowed under strict safety guidelines include:
- Fires within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, grills, fire pits, or other gas/liquid-fueled appliances.
- Residential use of charcoal grill fires, provided the use is actively supervised by an adult.
- Fires contained within fireplaces and wood-burning stoves inside permanent buildings only.
- Fire suppression or fire department training fires.
According to county leaders, the fireworks display scheduled for July 4 at Highland Heritage Regional Park is cancelled, alongside fireworks shows that were planned in Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker.
The decision comes as many communities across Colorado pull back on firework displays.
