Simi Valley police shoot attempted murder suspect at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KABC) — A 46-year-old man accused of attempted murder was shot by Simi Valley police Thursday afternoon while in custody at a Thousand Oaks hospital, prompting a large law enforcement response.
The shooting occurred around 12:20 p.m. at Los Robles Regional Medical Center near the intersection of Janss and Lynn roads. Spokespersons for the Simi Valley Police Department and Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed both agencies responded to the scene.
Ventura County sheriff’s officials said there is no threat to the public.
“All patients, colleagues and visitors are safe, and our hospital is operating as normal,” the hospital said in a statement.
The shooting stemmed from an earlier investigation in Simi Valley. Officers responded just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday to the 2000 block of Clover Street, where they found a husband and wife suffering from stab wounds, according to Simi Valley police.
Following an investigation, the husband was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.
The woman had surgery and is expected to survive.
“The suspect was admitted to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for continued treatment and evaluation,” a police statement said. “Throughout his hospitalization, the suspect remained in police custody under constant supervision by a Simi Valley Police Department officer.”
The officer monitoring the suspect noticed he needed medical attention and requested help from staff.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Rob Yoos told reporters the shooting happened during the medical assessment, but it’s unclear what exactly led to police opening fire.
“The suspect was struck by gunfire, was treated by medical staff, is currently in stable condition and is still in custody of the Simi Valley Police Department,” Yoos said.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting, with participation from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Simi Valley police also will conduct a separate investigation.
