Both Colombia and Ghana lost a player to injury during the early stages of their World Cup round of 32 match.
Colombia forward Jhon Córdoba was the first player to go down with an injury. He pulled up in the match’s opening minutes while chasing a Ghana player and immediately grabbed for his leg.
Córdoba remained down behind the play while Ghana had an attacking opportunity. He was eventually tended to by Colombia’s medical staff before being substituted out of the match in the eighth minute because of the injury.
Luis Suárez came on to replace Córdoba.
It didn’t take Ghana long to meet a similar fate. In the 13th minute, the Black Stars were forced to substitute right back Marvin Senaya out of the action after he suffered an injury of his own.
Alidu Seidu was tapped to replace Senaya, leaving both countries with four remaining substitutes in regulation on a hot day at Kansas City Stadium.
The two substitutions were historic, according to the Fox broadcast. It marked the first time in a World Cup that each side had made a substitution before the 15-minute mark in a match.

World Cup knockout round format
The World Cup becomes a single-elimination tournament once the knockout stage begins. The 32 remaining teams have been placed into a bracket, and the field will halve itself during each ensuing round of the tournament until a winner is crowned.
>The lone exception is that the two semifinal losers will play in a third-place game ahead of the World Cup final.
