GOUVERNEUR, New York (WWNY) – Around 2,000 National Grid customers in St. Lawrence County remained without power as of early Thursday evening.
Severe thunderstorms rolled through the region Wednesday night, causing damage and leaving people without electricity to keep cool from the hot temperatures.
In Gouverneur, trees covered parking lots and downed utility lines. On Main Street, a large tree uprooted and came to rest on top of a home. Crews in bucket trucks worked on utility poles throughout the area Thursday.
Residents cope with heat and spoiled food
Dan Losey, a Jefferson Street resident, lost power Wednesday night and spent part of Thursday cutting up tree branches that fell during the storm. He took breaks to sit in his car with the air conditioning running.
“I started about 7 o’clock this morning on this, then went down to McDonald’s to get something to eat and a cold tea,” Losey said.
With temperatures running hot, Losey said his concern turned to the food in his refrigerator.
“You can’t eat it once it thaws. You either have to cook it up or throw it away,” he said.
Losey said he was not the only resident on his street without power.
Neighbors wait for lights to come back on
Nearby, Laila Lewis and friends spent time outside to pass the time without electricity.
“At 1 in the morning, we couldn’t sleep because it was really hot, and the power came back on for like 10 seconds, and we were all freaking out, and then it just went back out,” Lewis said.
Power was expected to be restored to the area by Thursday night.
