4th of July celebrations for America’s 250th birthday across USA: Live updates

New York state’s oldest military unit which traces its heritage back to the Revolutionary War marched through the streets of downtown Manhattan to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the nation Saturday.
The Veteran Corp Artillery was founded in 1790 shortly after the US’s first war against the Redcoats out of fear the British would once again be coming back.
“They founded this unit immediately after the war because they thought the British, frankly, were coming back. And … ever since that day, we have been available to defend, but also available to do ceremonies like the ceremony you saw today,” Rob Mechmann, of Westchester, told The Post.
Video showed the small, uniformed troop marching to a military drum through Wagner Park in downtown Manhattan during the boat parade.
“This is the year that we should, especially, pay attention.” the 69-year-old said.
“But every year, on July 4th, we should remember those that lay down our lives for an idea, which was freedom.”
Mechmann said he has been thrilled by the positive response New Yorkers and tourists have had to the unit’s display, including many who have stopped to take photos.
“Well, I love it, but it is also an honor to serve. So I think of both of those things. It’s a pleasure to do what people want us to do, and just take pictures with us,” he said.
The patriot said he was inspired to serve by family members who were in the military and by a sense of “personal responsibility.”
He “said a long time ago that we could sleep well at night because people defend us.”
