Keely Hodgkinson revealed she couldn’t even walk just days before competing in a Diamond League race. The Olympic 800m champion finished second behind race winner Lilian Odira on Saturday in the Brit’s second consecutive defeat at the competition.

The 24-year-old drew attention during her race after viewers spotted cuts and bruises on her knees which were heavily bandaged. Speaking after her runners-up finish, Hodgkinson was brutally honest about her performance while opening up about her injuries.

She said: “It’s shocking, to be honest. It was not good, it’s been a bit of a week. My knees [are] taped up, I took a bad fall last week [and] four days ago I couldn’t even walk, so I guess I should take that into consideration but I wanted a lot more than that.”

The Atherton-born runner then took to Instagram to post a selection of photos, including one of her laid up in a medical room with the bruising on her knees noticeable. Her caption read: “Forward motion”.

Hodgkinson clocked a time of 1:56:73 in Eugene with Odira finishing in a time of 1:56:19. The Brit was well off the pace in regards to the British record she set in June (1:54:33) which wasn’t enough to finish ahead of winner Audrey Werro.

It’s been a troublesome season for Hodgkinson who had to withdraw from the 400m final at the UK Athletics Championship last month as she cited a “little twinge” as her decision to pull out.

She initially turned heads with her choice to begin challenging herself at a shorter distance. Testing herself at 400m is part of Hodgkinson’s plan to improve her first-lap speed and potentially break the 800m world record this summer.

The record is held by former Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvilova who ran the distance in 1:53:28 in 1983 which stands as the longest-standing world record in athletics.

Despite her injuries, Hodgkinson is still expected go after the achievement at the London Diamond League on July 18th.
