Two people recovered from Lachine Canal in critical condition

Two people were hospitalized in critical condition following an incident Saturday night in Montreal’s Lachine Canal.

The pair, described by paramedics as being in their 20s, were recovered from the water following an hours-long operation that began around midnight.

Authorities believe one person dived into the canal in an attempt to rescue the other person, Montreal fire department section chief Kevin Francoeur said.

The first person either jumped or fell into the canal, he said.

Two fire department boats and one police boat were on the scene at René-Lévesque Park to respond to the incident, Francoeur said. Fire department divers recovered the pair from the water.

Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition, Urgences-santé operations chief Steve Macduff said.

Macduff and Francoeur said they could not confirm whether the two people had died, referring The Gazette to the coroner’s office for further details.

The coroner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
