Gwangju FC Strengthen Defence with Signing of Brazilian Versatile Defender João Pedro

Gwangju FC have added further depth and tactical flexibility to their squad with the signing of Brazilian defender João Pedro.
The K League 1 club confirmed the arrival of the 23-year-old left-footed defender, who joins as a versatile defensive option capable of operating across the back line and in midfield.
Born in 2003, João Pedro came through the youth system of Athletico Paranaense in Brazil before gaining senior experience in the United States with Crown Legacy FC and Charlotte FC. He later moved to Europe, featuring in the Portuguese top flight with Rio Ave FC and in Poland’s Ekstraklasa with Radomiak Radom.
Despite his young age, João Pedro arrives in Korea with experience across Brazil, the United States and Europe, as well as a background with Brazil’s youth national teams.
A 186cm left-footed defender, João Pedro is primarily a left-back, but his value lies in his adaptability. He is also capable of playing at centre-back, as a defensive midfielder, or in a wide midfield role. That range of positions is expected to give Gwangju greater tactical variety as they look to strengthen their defensive structure for the remainder of the season.
Gwangju believe his profile fits the demands of modern football. João Pedro combines defensive awareness and positional discipline with the ability to play out from the back, progress possession through passing and carry the ball forward under pressure. His left-footedness also gives the team a valuable balance in build-up play, particularly in defensive transitions and when changing shape during matches.

The club view him as both an immediate first-team option and a player with long-term upside. Having already tested himself in European top-flight football, João Pedro is expected to bring composure, versatility and competition to Gwangju’s defensive unit.
A club official said João Pedro’s ability to cover multiple positions made him a particularly valuable addition.
“João Pedro is a rare left-footed multi-position defender with high tactical value,” the official said. “He can play in several defensive roles, and we expect his experience in European first divisions and his build-up ability to bring more stability to our back line.”
Speaking after completing his move, João Pedro said he was excited to begin a new chapter in Korea.
“I am very happy to become part of Gwangju,” he said. “I am excited to start a new challenge in a new league. I will give everything I have to help the team achieve its goals.”
He also sent a message to the club’s supporters, promising full commitment on the pitch.
“I will do my best in every match so that our fans can be proud of this team,” João Pedro added. “I am looking forward to the moment I can meet the Gwangju fans at the stadium as soon as possible.”
João Pedro’s arrival gives Gwangju another important option in defence, particularly as they seek players who can adapt to different systems and in-game tactical adjustments. With his European experience, physical profile and left-footed balance, the Brazilian could become a key piece in Gwangju’s push for greater consistency.
