We do need the rain.
As of Sunday, Boston’s rain total sat at 9.8 inches below the year-to-date average. For areas along the southern coast, this rain could even cut the year-to-date deficit at least in half. New Haven, Conn., could see a 5-inch rain YTD deficit get completely washed away by Tuesday morning.
We talked about how this summer may see intense rainfall events with dry stretches in between, and this storm is a perfect example of what the rest of summer could look like.
Quick look Tuesday: showers linger with Greater Boston seeing temps in the 60s
Tuesday will see scattered showers with a few embedded downpours continue as an area of low pressure slides south just off the coast, mainly focused over coastal Southern New England — including eastern and Southeastern Mass. — throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Rain should actually push into Northern New England on Tuesday, too, but precipitation should stay on the lighter side.
Boston will begin to see showers break up during the afternoon, but a sprinkle or two could remain through the commute home.

With plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, there will be a risk of a band or two dumping heavy downpours at times, especially over the South Coast and the Cape on Tuesday morning, setting up a low-end risk for a flash flood.

We’re going to end up seeing the highest rain totals across Southern Connecticut with a decent soaking south of Boston and across Rhode Island, the South Coast, and the Cape. There may be a few 5-inch rain totals sprinkled along the southern coasts, including New Haven, Conn.; Newport, RI, and perhaps near New Bedford to Plymouth.
It’ll all come down to where those embedded downpours unload.

Due to the combination of clouds, rain, and onshore flow, Boston is expected to reach the upper 60s on Tuesday, making you fish for a light jacket before you head out the door.
Northern New England will actually be the warmest on Tuesday, with highs nearing 80 degrees under partly sunny skies across areas like Burlington, Vt., and Bangor, Maine.

Wednesday will look to see the sun return across the region, with temperatures pushing back to the upper 70s and low 80s.

Meanwhile, Boston may see a quick trip back to the 90s on Thursday with mostly sunny skies.

Central/Western Mass.: Scattered showers, cool to the 60s across the board.
Southeastern Mass.: Scattered showers with some heavy downpours mixed in, mostly in the morning. Highs to the upper 60s. A little breezy.
Cape Cod and the islands: Scattered showers, a bit breezy. Highs to the mid and upper 60s.
Rhode Island: Scattered showers with heavy downpours mixed in, especially during the morning. Highs to the upper 60s and low 70s.

Vermont/Maine: Scattered showers across the southern half of both states, turning partly cloudy and warmer north. Highs in the upper 60s and low 70s south, near 80 north.
Connecticut: Scattered showers with pockets of heavy downpours mixed in during the morning. Drying out in the afternoon. Highs to the low 70s.
