First-round action in Estoril continues on Tuesday, when Stan Wawrinka potentially says goodbye to this tournament with Roman Andres Burruchaga on the other side of the net. Botic van de Zandschulp faces Portugal’s own Jaime Faria.

Wawrinka is retiring at the end of this season, and his farewell tour has produced a mixed bag of results. The 41-year-old Swiss has compiled a 7-14 record on the main tour, but he reached the third round of the Australian Open and has played well in a whole host of competitive losses — including 6-7(7), 7-6(16), 7-6(7), 7-6(5) to Matteo Berrettini at the All-England Club. Wawrinka’s post-Wimbledon clay swing began with a 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-4 setback against Jaime Faria in front of the home crowd in Gstaad.
Up first for the three-time Grand Slam champion on Tuesday at the Estoril Open is Burruchaga, whom he has never faced. The 60th-ranked Argentine is enjoying his best season as a professional, with 10 of his 14 ATP-level match victories coming in 2026. It is a tough week for Argentina, and especially for Burruchaga — whose father scored the game-winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final against West Germany. There is no reason, however, why he can’t turn it into a good week for himself in Estoril. Burruchaga is outstanding on clay and is more than capable of victimizing an opponent who is struggling down the stretch of his career.

(6) Botic van de Zandschulp vs. Jaime Faria
Van de Zandschulp and Faria will also be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers on Tuesday. Both men also played on clay last week, when Van de Zandschulp lost to Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in the Bastad second round and Faria followed up his Gstaad victory over Wawrinka by falling to Casper Ruud 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2.
Faria has never won a main-draw match at home in Estoril, but he comes into this event playing the best tennis of his life. The world No. 88 successfully qualified at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, reaching round three at the former and round two at the latter. He has had plenty of clay-court success on the Challenger circuit in 2026, as well. Van de Zandschulp’s form is mediocre at best and the 55th-ranked Dutchman is just 1-2 lifetime in Estoril (qualifying included). Look for the Portuguese fans to help push Faria across the finish line.
